THE DRUM

Drum Capacity & Pulling Power
The winch drum’s capacity to hold various rope sizes allows for flexibility in different operational scenarios. The pulling power of the winch depends heavily on your vehicle’s electrical setup. We recommend the following for optimal performance:

A 12V alternator with at least 180A output to charge the winch batteries.
Two 75Ah batteries to provide the necessary 12V DC supply.
High-quality 50mm² electrical cable (with 70mm² being preferred) for handling high loads.
Ensure clean electrical joints, and in areas prone to water exposure, apply conductive grease to protect connections.

Explorer3 XL Winch Drum – Built for Durability and Performance

Precision Machined Steel Drum for Smooth Operation
The Explorer3 winch features a steel drum, precision-machined to ensure smooth and true rotation within its drum bearings. The drum is sealed with high-quality seals at both ends, making the winch fully watertight and capable of operating underwater. Behind these seals, the drum bearings are equipped with free-running ball bearings that are packed with waterproof grease, providing an additional layer of protection against water ingress.

The Explorer3 Winch offers two gearing options, each designed to suit different recovery needs, providing varying pulling capacities and line speeds:

Durable and Easy to Service Gearbox

The gearbox is engineered for maximum strength, power, and ease of maintenance. Manufactured from chromium molybdenum steel and case-hardened for superior strength (up to 1230 N/mm²), it ensures exceptional durability. The gearbox uses semi-liquid grease rather than oil, making it easier to service, whether in the workshop or during an overlanding adventure.

Synthetic Rope Capacity
The Explorer3’s drum is designed to hold a range of synthetic ropes. Depending on the rope size, the drum can accommodate the following lengths:

36m of 10mm plasma or synthetic rope
30m of 11mm plasma or synthetic rope
25m of 12mm plasma or synthetic rope

Attaching the rope to the drum is made simple with the included Plasma Lock. This secure locking mechanism ensures the synthetic rope stays firmly attached to the drum, minimising the chance of slipping or accidental detachment.
